Midlothian
From the nineteenth century onwards people began to move from the rural parts of the country towards the cities, for work and housing. Jon's Redpath and Scott ancestors moved in this direction.

Perthshire
I have recently discovered a branch of the Whiteoak family who lived in Perthshire from the early seventeenth century. The name varies a lot in spelling - early records use Quhyttock, Quhytak and similar spellings - but in several places the name is definitely given as Whiteoak.
